Young marketers: green and cheap
March 2009
Resonates consultant Robert recently spent a day volunteering at the Willink School in Burghfield Common, West Berkshire. He was on hand to support an enterprise programme called Get Shirty, which is designed to let young people experience how to develop a business idea.
Students at the school worked in teams to start their own tee shirt companies, applying themselves to everything from marketing research and planning to designing products, logos, packaging and promotional material.
Trends of the day
Robert found it interesting that many of the students’ business ideas seemed influenced by the big issues of the day – specifically the environment and the recession. “There were a lot of Fairtrade and eco-friendly ideas on show,” he says, “and most of the students were careful to keep their tee shirts affordable.”
“On the whole they seemed genuinely enthusiastic about their tasks. Some teams were creative; others were business-minded; and a few pulled together to produce impressive work that took their research findings on board.”
Get Shirty is organised by
Education Business Partnership West Berkshire.
