Why you can't ignore social media
December 2009
Like it or not, your website is now a social media site. Since September 2009, there has been a way for people to leave comments for others to see whenever they visit your website, or anyone else’s for that matter.
Google Sidewiki
You have Google to thank (or curse) for this interesting development. The search giant introduced a new application called
Sidewiki that appears alongside each web page you look at in your web browser. All you have to do is
install it and then you are free to leave comments, or read comments that other people have made.
Embrace the social web
Does this change anything? Well, yes. The point of Sidewiki is to let people contribute helpful information, and there’s nothing to stop them from commenting on your organisation, products and services.
So if you don’t already have a social media strategy, this is a good time to get one. Think about what you can do to encourage positive Sidewiki entries. The ways of the web are becoming more and more social, and it makes good sense to embrace that trend.
Take a look at the Sidewiki for your own website – maybe someone has left some comments already.
