Latent Drive: combining comms and incubator services to drive investor interest

Latent Drive is developing innovative technologies to produce green hydrogen from saltwater without desalination. At scale, this approach aims to deliver hydrogen below the $2/kg ‘tipping point’, making it a truly financially competitive alternative to fossil fuels.

“What sets Resonates apart is their understanding of the green transition markets and in-depth experience of working with hydrogen businesses. They already spoke our language and every piece of coverage was strategic, positioning us for business success. The result was multiple media mentions, but also credibility with investors, validation from industry, and a foundation for the conversations that will drive partnerships and funding rounds.”

The brief

Latent Drive developed the world’s first direct seawater-to-hydrogen electrolyser stack. Its ‘SeaStack’ technology allows green hydrogen to be produced from seawater without expensive desalination, making it ideal for applications in ports and offshore locations. Crucially, it can achieve production costs below the $2/kg tipping point that makes green hydrogen a truly economically viable alternative to fossil fuels.

However, despite strong long-term growth trends in cleantech, having a breakthrough technology alone isn’t enough in today’s challenging and competitive investment environment.

Latent Drive turned to SALINE to become investment-ready, refining its business model and growth strategy. And to attract investor interest and facilitate crucial early conversations, Resonates came in to increase the visibility of Latent Drive’s disruptive technology and the substantial market opportunity it addresses.

A targeted PR plan with investors in its sights

We identified the messages and stories based on Latent Drive’s technology and milestones that would connect best with investor and national audiences. We then created a targeted three-month PR plan, comprising press releases and thought leadership.

We started by bringing attention to Latent Drive’s Innovate UK Launchpad South West Marine and Maritime competition funding for a trial using SeaStack to produce green hydrogen to fuel a harbour patrol vessel. Drawing on our established media relationships built over many years of providing interesting and newsworthy stories, we pitched to a wide range of publications across hydrogen, cleantech, maritime and investment-focused media to bring attention to this commercial demonstration of the technology’s ability to decarbonise ports.

In addition, we created thought leadership content exploring the economic tipping point and its implications for the hydrogen economy and the green transition. This raised the profile of Latent Drive’s leadership and positioned them as experts who are driven by technological breakthroughs and market opportunities.

Incubating success

Securing 32 pieces of tier one coverage in a matter of months, our campaign got Latent Drive in front of an audience of 500,000 readers in its target sectors. It generated 119 brand mentions and 12 backlinks that will enhance its brand presence and online search engine rankings for investors and analysts researching the offshore electrolyser market.

Our integrated approach of providing incubator services and strategic communications has helped Latent Drive significantly. By preparing the company for growth and telling a successful story of the commercial opportunity it presents, Resonates and SALINE primed Latent Drive to pursue a £2.5 million funding round.

Frazer Ely, CEO and Founder of Latent Drive said: “Resonates and SALINE have been instrumental in building awareness of our technology with trade and investor audiences. Resonates built credibility with the right audiences while SALINE refined our proposition and opened doors to investors. That combination has directly supported our most recent funding round.”
